Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, her grandmother, and her godparents. Her father abandoned her family. When she was a little girl, she struggled with an obsessive compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word association. Ford started acting in her teens, and was an actor in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford applied again for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after her fourth application she was accepted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her debut on television in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such programs on television as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style and humour, which she added to her repertoire in 1996, quickly gained her admiration.
